WI-03: Education -------------- 3707 Education Small Programs Disk -------------- 123 Learn 1.0 (123LRN) Schoeffel, Dave $3 is for teaching young children about numbers. VBRUN is required. ABC Learn 1.0 (ABC-LRN) Schoeffel, Dave $3 helps small children learn the alphabet. The top window displays the alphabet, and the child must use the mouse to select the next letter in sequence. There are three different levels of difficulty, and sound and hints can be toggled on and off. When all the letters are chosen correctly, the ABC song is played. VBRUN is required. Fret 1.0 Sawbuck Software $5 computes and displays finger positions for notes and chords on a guitar. Various display modes allow beginners to quickly identify any note on the fretboard. Guitar Scales & Modes 2.1 (GUITAR) Sampson, David $5 allows guitar players to practice and learn the various musical scales and modes. It has excellent graphics and very thorough documentation. Moon Tool 0.4 (MOONTOL) Altman, Jeffrey $5 displays the current phase of the moon, along with other important astronomical information. When iconized, the name of the icon reflects the current moon phase. This will not run in Real Mode. Name the States 1.0 (NTS-DL) Lewczyk, Dan $10 helps you and your kids learn the states and their capitals. You are provided with a map of the U.S., and you must identify the states as they are randomly highlighted. There is an option for also identifying the correct state capital. VBRUN is required. Touch Type Tutor for Windows 1.0 (TTTWIN) Gray Design Associates ASP $24 is an easy-to-use, customizable typing tutor. The tutorial section allows you to set the WPM threshold and the number of screens required to complete a lesson. Speed tests can be given on multiple skill levels including general, legal, and technical. Lesson results can be displayed in chart form to help graphically illustrate progress. A typing game is also provided. The ability of this program to adapt itself to the proficiency of the user makes it suitable for individual use, classroom situations, or office use. USAMap Thatcher, Gregory $0 provides a map of the continental United States. It displays time zones, latitude and longitude, and helps you determine driving times and distances between major cities. It also provides information about each state including square miles, Capitol city, and the date it joined the Union. The map may be printed or copied to other programs via Windows' Clipboard. We could not get the program to change states like it was supposed to, but we still found it worthwhile. Vocabulary Builder 1.05 (VOCABLD) Ivory Tower Software $0 can extract a vocabulary list from a text file and save the list. You can also merge different lists and add your own definitions to each word. Requires VBRUN100. The resulting display of swirling galaxies and black holes is interesting to watch. Chemica Elementum (CHEMICA) Tenax $10 contains a periodic table of the elements. When you place the cursor on a symbol, a window pops up giving you information about that element. Chemistry Program 1.0 (CHEM) Thatcher, Gregory $0 helps you learn about the Periodic Table of the Elements. Changing the temperature changes the color coding of each element, to inform you of it's state (solid, liquid, or gas) at a specific temperature. Galaxy 2.0 (11-93 CD) Cornelison, Michael $10 simulates the motions of stars under the influence of gravity. You may create a field of stars to begin with, and then watch how the stars move as they are accelerated by their mutual gravitational attractions. You can vary the number of stars, their initial velocities around a central position, and the magnitude of the Gravity Constant. This also doubles as a screen saver. WIN31 is required and a 386/486 is highly recommended. MathFlash 1.0 (MTHFLSH) Kaufman, Brad $15 is a traditional flash cards program for learning multiplication tables, addition, subtraction, and division. You can set the upper limit of the random numbers from 10 to 100. Accuracy is recorded at the end of each session. Objects are drawn on screen to assist student with addition and subtraction modules. Requires VBRUN100.DLL. MathGraf 2.4.1 (MATHGRF) Robin, Patrick $32 will plot the graph of user defined functions of one variable. You can also load and save graph files, zoom, copy to Windows' clipboard, and more. Several sample files are included. Protozoa Simulation 1.0 (PROTOZO) Johnson, David C. $10 is a biological evolution simulation. It defines a species of protozoa and an environment in which they live, breed and die. Only the fittest survive and evolve to carry on the species. WinFG 1.0 Van Riper, Steven $0 lets you enter up to four mathematical functions and graph them on the screen. Different ranges and colors can be specified, and a bitmapped image of the graph can be copied to the clipboard. WinMath 1.0 Fox, Jim $15 is an easy to use grade school math program. A mathematical equation is displayed and the mouse is used to select the correct answer from a graphic keypad. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are supported. You can easily select the highest number for the answer to control the difficulty of the problems. A running total of correct answers is kept, along with an average response time. VBRUN is required. WMath 1.1 Jarrett, Eric $5-$8 generates addition, subtraction, multiplication or whole division problems at random. A correct answer will get a big smile from the icon. If you give an incorrect answer, the icon will frown, and the correct answer will be given. Correct and incorrect answers are recorded. The program also prints a report-card. It allows you to create a quiz on any subject, and will encode it, play it back, and keep score. Features include an option to display the correct answer, an on-screen timer, several sample quizzes, and more. IQ Test 2.0 (IQTEST) Wilkins, Terry $15 is a 30-minute IQ test for those who have always wondered just how smart they really are. WinFlash 2.1 (WINFLSH) (08-93 CD) Open Windows ASP $15 is a flash card program for Windows 3.1. It allows question and answer pairs of up to 1000 characters each. Test files are easily created using NotePad or any ASCII editor. Important questions can be assigned to a priority list, so they will be asked with greater frequency. Since any type of information can be included, this is an excellent educational tool for any age group. #12506 Other ------------ Consti (CONSTI) Arbor Verde Press $5 contains the U.S. Constitution compiled as a Windows Help file. It includes a Quick Reference Guide, Hypertext Jumps, and over 200 search terms and phrases. It displays strikeout text for section superceded or amended with hypertext jumps to the appropriate amendments. --------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #12506 --------------------------------- ------------------- Large Program Disks: ------------------- Astronomy Lab for Windows 1.13 Personal MicroCosms $33 #27863/4358 [2 disks] is an innovative astronomy program with many interesting features. It can generate animation of many celestial events, including solar and lunar eclipses, lunar and planetary occulations, transits of Mercury and Venus, the orbits of Jupiter's bright moons, and more. It offers reports of many important astronomical events of the past, present, and future. It produces graphs that illustrate many fundamental astronomical concepts. This is an excellent program that should appeal to both novice and seasoned astronomers. A version for Windows NT is available on disk #20195. Chalkboard Math for Windows Pegasus Development $16 #20001/4130 is a fun and exciting animated math game. It presents elementary math problems on a chalkboard. You enter the answers by punching in numbers with the mouse. You can choose from five difficulty levels, or automatically increase problem complexity. A face drawn on the chalkboard smiles at correct answers and frowns at incorrect ones, and a cleverly animated mouse runs across the screen when five problems in a row are answered correctly. Other features include multiple scoring options, sound effect toggling, and high score tracking. VGA is required. Toy Chest 2.0 Vantage Software Co. $various #20001/4084 contains several educational program for children 2 to 6. Pictures ABC displays the letters of the alphabet, and you can select a letter with the mouse or the keyboard. After a letter is selected, a picture of an animal is revealed and a digitized voice pronounces the word. Also included on this disk is Actions 123, an animated educational program which teaches preschool-age children about numbers; Kiddie Puzzles, a jigsaw puzzle demo; My Coloring Book demo; and Little Piano demo. Requires a 286-10 or faster, EGA/VGA, and 500k of disk space. See and Say Dyck, Bill $15 #20001/4512 helps young children develop letter recognition. It uses digitized children's voices to speak the letters of the alphabet. There are three different games to play: point to a letter and hear it spoken, hear a letter spoken and find it, and a "Simon Says" type game. This is an excellent computerized introduction to the alphabet for children. Requires Win31, a sound card, and VBRUN. Classroom Helper 1.0 (CHLPWIN) (10-93 CD) David F. Eisenberg $50 #20276 (3.5" MegaDisk Only) is a full-featured gradebook program for Windows 3.1+. Grades may be entered by letter grades, number correct, and number incorrect. Support is provided for tests, extra credit, and a homework completion bonus. Up to 200 students in 100 subjects may be tracked. Printed reports include report cards, lists of missing work, student summaries, and more. The Earth Centered Universe 1.4a [ECU] (08-93 CD) Nova Astronomics $35 #12403 simulates many features of the Earth's sky. You only need to enter your geographic location/time and the local sky is colorfully displayed on the screen. You can view stars, planets, Sun, Moon, and "deep sky" objects. Constellation, coordinate grid, ecliptic, and local horizon lines are also displayed. This is an excellent observation tool for any person interested in the night sky. A 386 or better is required. Edwin Addition/Subtraction 3.0 [EDAM03] (08-93 CD) Edwin Educational Software ASP $15 #20227 is a multi-level math tutorial for Windows 3.1. Each module features a standard drill, with clever pictures and simple demonstrations of how to do adding and subtracting. Levels and individual student names can be saved between sessions. Correct answers are scored on-screen, and elapsed time is also displayed. Each level can be tested with a multiple-choice quiz. Problems may also be printed. Available on 3.5" 1.44mb MegaDisk and CD only. The Flashcards System for Windows 1.0 [FSW] (09-93 CD) You and Me Products $29 #20252 helps teach elementary mathematical concepts to children from kindergarten through the 3rd grade. The Mathplay section contains a number line display, addition/subtraction/multiplication tables, and an apple counting game. The Flashcards program provides problems for the child to answer. Parent/Teacher controls allow you to customize problems for each child. Requires WIN31, VGA, and a hard disk. Available on 3.5" 1.44mb MegaDisk and CD ONLY! The Genetic Code NatureSoft $10 #12245 is a molecular biology program for Windows. It provides detailed information about amino acids, including standard abbreviations and chemical/physical data. VBRUN200 is included on this disk. Googolpede for Windows 1.4 [GOOGOL] (08-93 CD) Dawson, Paul T. $35 #12408 is a fun multi-player arcade math game for Windows 3.1. An equation is displayed at the top of the screen, and you must direct the Googolpede to the proper true/false square without running into yourself or the walls. To make things more interesting, your tail grows longer with each correct answer. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are supported and you can choose the highest value of the numbers used in the equations. Other features include a colorful animated background, high score list, sound options, and more. VBRUN200 is included on this disk. Gradebook for Windows 2.11 [GB] (08-93 CD) Stevens, Russell ASP $34 #4508 is a flexible grade management program for Windows. It can keep track of student scores on various tasks in up to ten different user-defined categories, including extra credit. Student names and optional ID numbers may be entered manually or optionally imported from an ASCII file. Grades may be calculated automatically by summing the raw scores or by assigning weighting factors to particular categories of tasks. Other features include password protection, score scaling, customized charts, Word and Excel macros, and much more. This is a very comprehensive package, suitable for all grade levels. Requires VBRUN200.DLL. Grammar Expert 1.0 Wintertree Software Inc. $30 #12059 is a reference for the rules of English grammar, punctuation, and effective writing. It contains many practical answers, guidelines, and advice on thousands of grammar-related points for business, writers, students, and people learning English as a second language. Graphmatica for Windows kSoft, Inc. $20 #4121 is an interactive algebraic equation grapher used to plot mathematical curves. It supports several styles of graphing, including regular Cartesian, polar, parametric, slope-field, and initial-value approximations. Other advanced features include remembering the last 25 equations graphed, several ways to scale or size the grid, and the ability to save lists of equations and the current settings for later use. On-line help and demonstration files are also included. Hangman Jr. 1.00 [HANGJR1] 11-93 CD Alston Software Labs $14 #12616 is a graphic spelling game for children ages 5 to 9. It displays a colorful picture of an animal, and the child must choose the letters that correctly spell the animal's name. A positive rewarding message appears upon spelling completion. You can also create your own graphics/word list. VBRUN100 is included on this disk. Kana Guess 1.0 [KANAG] Leckett, Blaine $5 #12486 is a Concentration-type game for learning Japanese Kana. Features include a practice mode, optional timer, context-sensitive help, and more. Requires VBRUN200. Kids Qwerty (KIDQ) (10-93 CD) Doc Software $5 #12571 helps teach the alphabet and number recognition using the computer keyboard. A digitized human voice speaks the letter to be located, and provides positive reinforcement when correct. A winking smiley face also rewards the child. Requires VBRUN100 and Windows 3.1. <QWERTY.PCX> KidSpell 1.1 Tosa, Yasunari $1 #12017 is a Windows spelling program for children. It associates words in a list with a bitmap. Several word list/bitmap combinations are provided, including the alphabet, numbers, shapes, and colors. There are three different games available, and you can create your own customized word lists and associate bitmap files with them. Kidware 2.00 WordSmith Document Design Inc. $20 #12331 contains several educational word and number games for Windows. Wordwiz lets players try to unscramble a five word. Deal A Fortune is patterned after Wheel of Fortune. Both of these games allow you to add your own words to the dictionary. Numero is a number pattern guessing game. Other games include Stones, a logic/strategy game; Fun Times, a multiple choice quiz; Typewriter, keyboard practice; and Pie Charts, an intro to presentation graphics. VBRUN100 is included on this disk. KURV+ for Windows 2.2 [KURV1, KURV2] (10-93 CD) Conrad Button's Software $12 #20131/4839 [2 disks] is a curve fitting program for Windows 3.x. It uses X,Y data to determine the coefficients for 27 mathematical equations (including third and fourth order polynomials). A built-in data editor allows you to create, edit, or import files for curve fitting. Comparisons and forecasts are instantly available, and can be displayed or printed as graphs or tables. VBRUN200 is included. Look and Listen Series 5.0 (09-93 CD) Softline, Inc. $various # (see below) is an excellent collection of educational programs for pre-schoolers. All the programs feature colorful graphics, digitized talking sound effects, and a slick installation program. Sounds can be played through the PC speaker or any installed sound card. We have grouped the disks into a 4-disk and 5-disk set @ $6.99/set. Requires WIN31. #20114 Look and Listen A,B,C and Dinosaurs (4 disks) #20115 Look and Listen 1,2,3; Shapes; Animals; Opposites; Colors (5 disks) MasterMind Typing 1.03 [MMTYPE1, MMTYPE2] (09-93 CD) Turnquist, Peter $34 #27859/4613 [2 disks] is an interactive touch typing teacher for Windows. It uses the learner's response time to automatically adjust repetitions. This method of learning combined with interesting graphics make this an excellent introduction to typing. More experienced users can drill themselves up to speeds of 60 words per minute. 1.5 meg RAM, a 286 or better machine, EGA video, and a mouse is required. Math Apples You and Me Products $5 #12320 helps teach elementary math concepts to children ages 4 through 8. It uses apples and groups of apples to show values and operations in the decimal number system. The program uses clever graphics to reveal the intermediate steps involved in calculations for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Other features include musical sound effects, and random or user-defined operands. VBRUN200 is included on this disk. Requires WIN31. Matrix Lab 1.0 [MLAB10] 11-93 Ossorio, David T. $35 #12641 makes computations with matrices simple and easy. Matrices may be any size from 1x1 to 8x8; matrix elements may be fractions, real, or complex numbers. All of the basic matrix operations/computations are included, such as inverses, determinants, three types of row reduction, multiplication, division, subtraction, etc. Matrices can be saved/loaded in groups of up to sixteen. Newton 1.0 [NEWTON] (09-93 CD) Keet, Paul $10 #12490 is a planetary/solar system construction kit for Windows. 3.1. It allows you to experiment with things like binary and trinary stars, the sling shot effect, retrograde motions, energy transfer in near collisions, and a whole lot more. This is a fairly technical program, and should be used in conjunction with any good book on physics, astronomy, or space science. Periodic Table 2.01 SMI Enterprises Corp. $15 #20086/12259 [2 disks] is a very extensive Periodic Table of the Elements for Windows. It contains data on over 800 isotopes, with decay trees for over 500. When you click on the symbol of an element, you are informed of it's atomic number, atomic weight, melting point, who discovered it, and much more. The on-line help system lets you click on technical words and get a definition for them. Other features include a quiz mode and several useful printing options. A 600K+ manual is provided that covers many elemental concepts. SkyMap 1.3 [SKYMP13A, SKYMP13B, SKYMP13C] (09-93 CD) Marriott, Christopher A. ASP 15 - 50 Pounds Sterling #20253 [3 disks] is a powerful astronomy package for Windows 3.1. It can display a map of the sky as seen from any point on Earth for any date between 4000 BC and 8000 AD. A database of more than 15,000 stars down to magnitude 7 is provided. Detailed information about stars, planets, constellations, and deep sky objects can be obtained by clicking on an item with the right mouse button. Other features include the ability to link GIF or BMP graphic files to objects, color and black-and-white printing, and much more. Strategic Business Simulator 1.0 Etling & Robb Software $? #4828 is a classroom management decision-making game for High School and College students. Teams of three or more individuals are assembled to act as business executives making periodic high-level decisions in marketing and other important financial areas. At the beginning of each quarter, each team makes decisions for their firm choosing output levels, price, advertising expenditures, etc. The computer then simulates the business activity of each firm and prepares reports showing the results during the quarter. Requires WIN31 and EGA/VGA. Sunshine 1.0 (SUNSHINE) (10-93 CD) Langin Software ASP $34 #12574 is a beginner's tutorial for Windows. The book-like interface uses the Windows Help system, complete with graphics and pop-up word definitions. Ututor for Windows Ginsberg Software $28 #3961 is a tutorial about cell biology. VBRUN is included on the disk. Vocabulary Builder for Windows 1.0 BC Enterprises $19 #20200 [2 disks] is a comprehensive vocabulary testing system for Windows. It contains 1600 words in categories covering nouns, verbs, adjectives, and word elements. You can also create a customized 400-word database or edit any of the included 1600 words. Tests can be in the form of a multiple-choice quiz, or you can choose a unique drag and drop matching exam. Up to 50 users can be tracked, and a sophisticated graphing module can display and print a variety of reports. This is an excellent package for students preparing for the SAT, as well as for adults wishing to improve their vocabulary. VBRUN200 is included on this set. WSpellB 1.0 Jarrett, Eric $8 #4833 is a spelling tutor. It flashes words at a user-defined rate, and you must try to spell the word correctly. ASP $35 #12269 is an equation graphing program for high school and junior high level mathematics. Features include expression parsing, cartesian coordinate graphs in two and three dimensions, polar coordinate graphs, variable solution ranges, full rotational and zoom capability for 3D graphs, Clipboard support, and more. WinWorld 1.1 [WINWRLD] 11-93 CD JAB Software $18 #20297 is a challenging and fun geography trivia game for Windows 3.1+. Up to four players or teams may participate. You will receive talking hints from Bart Simpson, the Terminator, Albert Einstein, and others. Other features include excellent digitized sounds, 256-color images, and multiple topics. Requires VBRUN200. This is available on 3.5" 1.44mb MegaDisk and CD only. Word Treasure 1.0 [WTWIN] Charles D. Simmons $10 #20255 [2 disks] provides an interesting way to improve your vocabulary. It is designed to display a new word each time you turn on your computer. An optional timer allows a new word to be popped up at a given time interval during the day. Over 500 words are included, providing pronunciation, meaning, and usage. You can also add your own words. An optional hangman game will test your new-found knowledge.
